On behalf of the World Medical Association, I am pleased to welcome you all participants from our membership as well as external experts who have great interests in this dedicated conference on physician conscientious objection. As we had a vast amount of feedback on this subject from global medical ethics experts during the public consultation in the summer of 2021, I believe that the discussion in this conference will be important and can give a guide how we address this subject in the revision of the the International Code of Medical Ethics (ICoME) which outlines the guidelines, norms, and central duties of the medical profession.
To the Indonesian Medical Association, I am grateful for co-hosting this important conference in Jakarta!
Dr. Heidi Stensmyren
President of World Medical Association
We are pleased to welcome all delegates and participants of this year’s International Code of Medical Ethics Dedicated Conference on Physician Conscientious Objection which will take place on the 4-5 July 2022 in Jakarta conference. Ethical issues are essential for physicians to comprehend. Without ethics, a physician cannot provide an optimal treatment. A doctor could even harm a patient without holding on to proper ethical principles. This conference aims to deepen knowledge and to provide a new perspective in deciding on a dilemmatic course of action. Sometimes, wise decisions don't come from actions, but from abstaining from actions.
We hope that the delegates will enjoy their time in Jakarta. Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia, which serves as an ideal meeting place for representatives from the archipelago. As such, it is also a suitable place for an international scale conference to take place.
Dr. Muhammad Adib Khumaidi
